Laplae Keang Khoi , a novel by Utit Hemamoon, has been named the winner of the SEA Write Award for 2009.
The award was announced yesterday by Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra. A shortlist of seven finalists was revealed last month.
The SEA Write is arguably the most prestigious literary award in Southeast Asia. It revolves around three categories:
short story, poetry and novel. This year, the category was the novel.
Yesterday's announcement at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel was characterised by consensus. The winning entry won not only Utit: Holds readers the vote of the spellbound judging panel but also seemed to receive the approval of literary journalists attending the event.
Laplae Kaeng Khoi is Mr Utit's fifth book and third novel.
The judging panel said the 444-page novel was crafted with thematic, narrative and linguistic mastery. Despite the novel's length, the engaging plot, subtle storytelling and beautiful language held readers spellbound.
Laplae Kaeng Khoi recounts the story of a family living in Saraburi's Kaeng Khoi and Uttaradit's Laplae districts. It reveals the story of a broken identity and local history.
